Some of the benefit of having a municipality? ‌

Access to Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) roads’ infrastructure funding, to which the County is a contributor through the fuel levy but not an automatic beneficiary. Only gazetted municipalities benefit from this fund. ‌

‌Access to international funding administered in Kenya such as the Kenya Urban Support Programs (KUSP), which is only accessible to municipalities. ‌

‌Globally, the world is structured in such a manner that it recognizes the special challenges faced by urban areas. Subsequently, funds have been set apart by global institutions such as the World Bank, BHC/FCDO the European Union, JICA, USAID, UKAID, the UN and virtually all others only accessible to gazetted urban entities such as cities, municipalities and towns.

The partnership to host the symposium in collaboration with other stakeholders began with the County Government of Machakos in 2016, Africa Fire Mission in 2017 in Kiambu County, County Government of Murang’a in 2018, Kenya Airports Authority in 2019. The Covid- 19 Pandemic preventive measures did not deter the momentum and a virtual symposium was held in 2020. New partnerships were made in 2021 with the Polish Center for International Aid and the CID Training School in South C.
The EMS and FIRE Symposium and competition has now morphed into an exchange program where EMS providers from across the Country, Europe and USA gather for a week of cross learning interactions, multi-disciplinary training bringing together stakeholders in Fire, EMS, Security and the community in a unified training. Testimonies have been shared of how a firefighter was able to rescue a child from a pit latrine based on the skills learned at the symposium and competition.
The symposium is an outstanding opportunity to gather, engage in continuous medical education and get updated in emerging trends in emergency management globally. It will also create a platform for building stronger strategic partnerships by enhancing networking amongst key actors in the sector including emergency response practitioners, corporates, entrepreneurs, medical and clinical personnel and the general public on the shared common good. It will promote policy dialogue and regulatory coherence for emergency response in Kenya and spur research and innovation towards addressing Kenya’s challenges.
The symposium is an excellent platform for promoting public participation in the important matter of emergency response. It will provide an opportunity for policymakers from national and county governments, researchers, academia, emergency care providers in the public and private sector, regulators and associations to interact with the challenges in the industry first hand. The symposium will allow county governments’ bench mark with the best practice that will enable set up EMS teams. It will allow interagency joint training that will ease response as the responders will be familiar with the each other and the structure of ICS.
