Isiolo County Governor H.E Dr. Mohamed Abdi Kuti has hosted a USAID delegation in his office prior to MOU signing between the County Government and the U.S Government through USAID that signified a joint commitment to Kenya-led development in Isiolo county. The delegation was led by Head of Mission USAID Kenya and East Africa Mr. Mark Meassick.
During the visit the Governor lauded United States of America (U.S.A) for considering his County as one of the eight beneficiaries counties of the Prosper Africa program,” He added saying that the program will go a long way in growing the economy of the County and providing job opportunities for many jobless youths.
USAID Mission Director Mark Meassick said the MOU would provide a framework to guide the new way that USAID and The County Government of Isiolo would do business together directly by; aligning activities, plans, and budgets, designing new programs and priorities together for the benefit of the Isiolo people. This he observed would accelerate people’s journey to self-reliance.
The county, alongside seven others – Kakamega, Makueni, Kiambu, Kisii, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nakuru – will benefit from the Sh50 billion initiative by the USAid, dubbed Prosper Counties Initiative, that seeks to spur development in the devolved units.
He also observed that they chose Isiolo County because the Governor is entrepreneurial and also the good relationship between the Executive and the County Assembly.
“We are ready to support County Government of Isiolo as we have witnessed good leadership and there is a conducive business opportunity and thus will ensure the residents witness the fruits of devolution, ” He added.
Speaking in a press briefing Governor Kuti observed going forward the County doesn’t need programs driven by aid like in the past, but programs anchored on trade for the benefit of both the American people and Isiolo County residents. “I propose that the programs we sign an MOU for today lead to the development of Special Economic Zones that will integrate industries that will provide employment for our many jobless youths,” He added saying the Prosper Africa program will play a significant role in the socio-economic development of the County.
